Jasper and Hinton riders rally through rain on TransRockies Print

The first few stages of the TransRockies mountain bike race is over, and Jasper and Hinton riders are dotted throughout the results. 

The race took off from Fernie, B.C. on August 8 and is set to finish up in Canmore on Saturday, August 14. A number of teams from Jasper, Valemount and Hinton are taking part in each of the categories. 

The second stage that finished up on Monday, was highlighted by Cory Wallace of Jasper coming in first place after the 71-kilometre rally to Sparwood, B.C. in the TR3 open men’s category. Wallace finished the stage in 3:07:32, just 26 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. 

Another top finish was Dean Etienne of Hinton, who finished third in the masters men’s (40 and over) in just 4:00:11.

In the TR3 open women, Barbara Schmidt of Jasper rode to a 19th place finish in 6:18:41. 

Stephen Hanus of Hinton finished in 53rd position after a 4:48:33 ride from Fernie. 

In the team categories, Pam Roy and Vidal Michaud were 11th, riding with the mixed group. They finished in 5:50:56. Roy and Michaud entered their team, Ride for Jasper Oxygen, to raise money to bring a hyperbaric chamber to Jasper to help kids with autism.

The Bear’s Paw Bakery were 12th overall in the open men’s team category. Matt Staneland and Victor Vassallo of Jasper arrived in Sparwood after 4:11:10 of riding. 

In the 80 and over men’s team category, Les Van der Roest of Valemount, along with teammate Greg Bergen finished in 5:16:43 for 21st place. 

The first stage was rainy for the start of the race, but the weather let up once all teams got under way on the 31-kilometre first stage that would climb 1,300 metres over single-track trail on Sunday, August 8. 

In the open men team category, the Bear’s Paw Bakery team of Staneland and Vassallo were 17th overall at the end of the first stage. They finished the time trial in 2:54:35. 

Roy and Michaud were 12th overall after day one in the mixed team category. They finished the first stage in 4:17:55. 

 Van der Roest and his teammate finished in 24th place in 3:52:59, in the men’s 80 and over category. 

In the TR3 open men single category, Wallace rode to third place overall in 2:00:14. He was just 5:53 off the leaders. 

Also in the open men single category, Hanus finished in 3:18:13. 

In the TR3 open women single category, Schmidt finished 24th in 4:51:57.

Etienne raced to a fourth place finish in the masters men’s single category. Etienne completed stage one in 2:25:39, just 9:54 off the leaders of that category.
