Both the Jasper Peewee and Midget hockey teams won the first game in a best-of-three final series over the weekend.
The Peewee team won their final against Hinton 7-5 while the Jasper Midget Bearcats successfully beat Whitecourt 3-1.
After finishing on top for the season, the Midget Bearcats are just one win away from being hailed the top team in their league.
Dennis Zaffino, Midget Bearcats coach, said that he hoped the team would have a better start this weekend after a slow and “rusty” beginning to the game on Sunday, due to lack of game-play over the last four weeks.
“We started playing a little better in the second period and starting to play our game a little more and I expect that they’ll be carrying on from there [this weekend]”, said the coach.
“If we play as well as we did this weekend we shouldn’t have any trouble coming out with a win,” said Trevor Young, assistant coach for the team.
Although not wanting to be over-confident, Zaffino and Young both expect the team to win again this weekend with Zaffino adding that “we play to win the whole thing and we’ve only won one game out of the best of three, so we haven’t won anything yet.”
Should the team lose to Whitecourt on Saturday, the deciding game will be held here in Jasper on Sunday afternoon. |
