Two members from the Jasper Gymnastics Club have made their coach proud after returning from the provincial championships over the weekend.
After qualifying at the trials in March, gymnasts Tannis Potter and Katy Quackenbush competed last weekend in Brooks.
“The top 12 athletes in each level get to go through to provincials,” said head coach Nadia Wassef.
Quackenbush came in first place on beam, first on vault, and second all-around. She missed by 5/100 of a point of being the all-around provincial champion, Wassef said.
Potter came in fifth on vault and 13th all-around against some tough competition. “I was very proud of them both,” Wassef.
This is great for Jasper, she added. “Seeing as we have our own facility, we’re trying to increase awareness.” The Jasper Gymnastics Club will host the Alberta Team Championships on June 14.
The weekend of May 1 and 2, the club will attend a competition in St. Albert, and some of the younger members who are now just old enough to compete will have the chance to go. “I’m taking 13 girls to that one, it’s the biggest group to go to a competition from Jasper,” Wassef said.
“I’m very excited and very proud to be taking such a big team.” |
