Some of Jasper’s finest athletes showed off their skills in Hinton over the weekend, competing in the Mountainview Triathlon - with Gerrard Lewin winning his age group and coming fourth overall in the Olympic triathlon.
A trio of female Jasperites, from Sayuri Restaurant, also took out first honours in the women’s team category.
Lewin was joined by his training partner, John Kovacs, who came 13th overall in the Olympic triathlon, which consisted of a 1500 metre swim, 40 kilometre bike and 10 kilometer run.
Jasper was also represented in the sprint triathlon, 750m swim, 20 kilometre bike and 5 kilometre run, by Lisa Wells and Alana McGrath who finished 31st and 37th respectively.
The Duathlon event also saw Jasper take third place, with Stephanie English, the only female racer in that category.
According to Lewin, competitors faced some fierce winds and cold temperatures that made the race a bit tougher than normal.
Running directly into the west wind, the 40 kilometre ride for Lewin was “fairly difficult” when they were heading east but it was easier to come back with the wind behind them.
Despite the challenging conditions, Lewin managed to improve over his time last year which he was pretty happy with saying that there was “always next time.”
The Hinton race marked the beginning of the season, which was its main importance for Lewin. “You have to get out there and get one under your belt,” he said noting that he has five more triathlons before October. |
