Seven time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong is scheduled to roll through Jasper National Park this summer as part of a massive fundraiser to combat breast cancer.

Armstrong, who will have just finished competing in the Tour de France three weeks prior, will ride a route likely beginning at Jasper Park Lodge along with 45 fund raisers on August 26.

Fundraisers will need to raise a minimum of $25,000 in order to ride with Armstrong, as well as participate in a private dinner with the world-class cyclist.

“Lance brings a global message to eradicate cancer. If he can lend his name and face to the cause, that’s wonderful,” said Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation spokesperson Tracy Sopkow. “He’s one of the most accomplished athletes of all time.”

The event will actually begin in Edmonton, and according to Sopkow, this is Armstrong’s first time fundraising in the city.

It is unknown at this time if or where spectators will be allowed to catch a glimpse of Armstrong.

She said there are still spots available for those who wish to ride with Armstrong. A $1,000 deposit is required to secure a spot, and fundraisers have until August 26 to raise the $25,000.

The route has yet to be determined, however it may run to Maligne Lake and back, or up to Marmot Basin. Sopkow said she’s looking for local cycling groups in Jasper who may wish to be a part of the event.

Armstrong has ridden through the Canadian Rockies before during fundraising efforts – obviously something he enjoys. Armstrong apparently approached the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation about this event. His charity – Livestrong – has raised millions to combat cancer.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation raised more than $10.5 million in the Prairie provinces last year. All of the money raised in this event will go to cancer research in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Those who can’t raise $25,000 but still want to make a donation can visit the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation web site.
