Jasper will host a Terry Fox run after all.

Stephanie English, organizer of the Spring Run-off, has announced she will take over organizational duties for the Terry Fox run.

“I think it’s a worthy cause. I have experience with the Spring run-off and it would be easier for me to do it. I have lots of support.”

English has helped organize the Spring Run-off, which takes place at Lake Annette, for the past five years. While the Terry Fox run has a much different goal than the Spring Run-off, English, who also competes in Iron man triathlons, said she’s up to the task.

“It’s a different event. It’s an absolutely non-competitive event. The focus is more on the volunteers and the fundraising.”

The race will occur at Lake Edith on Sept. 13.

English participated in the Terry Fox run two years ago, and will be calling on her husband Allen White to help run the event.

“It’s one of the best local Canadian events to raise funds for cancer. Almost 90 per cent of the money raised goes to research. The only way that happens is if people volunteer,” English said.

The Jasper resident has set a fundraising goal of $8,000 for the 2009 event. Last year, seventy Jasper runners raised $7,000 for cancer research. English said if runners are able to raise an extra $10 each, they’ll be able to reach that goal.

Those looking to participate or make a pledge can pick up a form at Totem Ski Shop, Source for Sports or Freewheel. Pledges are also accepted at www.terryfox.org.
