Lightening strikes during Saturday night’s storm and the continued dry weather resulted in another wildfire last weekend by Mount Cumnock, east of Jasper and north of Vine creek.

Despite the fire being just 17 hectares strong on Sunday morning, Parks Canada estimates that it grown to about 194 hectares in size by Monday evening due to the hot and dry weather.

Due to its location, crews were unable to work on the ground, but the fire was being contained by the landscape surrounding it.

The small amount of rain provided some relief to fire-fighting crews as it helped contain the fire.

“We may not get that same smoke column that you may have seen Sunday,” said Jasper National Park spokesperson Kim Weir on Monday morning, “simply because we got a little bit of rain out there.”

Crews were beginning work to prevent the fire from spreading into the Snake Indian Valley on Tuesday morning. Due to the location of the fire, the public is not threatened.

The wildfire was originally reported to Parks Canada at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Attack crews from Jasper and Prince Albert responded to the blaze.

The fire is expected to push some smoke into Jasper and Hinton, however it is not expected to affect traffic on highway 16.

Road closures have been lifted in the area.

The fire danger around Jasper National Park remains extreme.
