So far, only 41 applications have been received for 42 apartments. Forty of those applicants have been approved by the Town and are now waiting for the typical background checks with former landlords, which will be done by funding partners, Mountain Park Lodges (MPL).
Shepherd said he isn’t concerned that there are less applicants than number of apartments, considering the bulk of the summer staff haven’t arrived in town yet.
“And the fact that people couldn’t really get in to look at it may have affected it somewhat. I think it will be filled – when the last unit is ready for occupancy, there will probably be somebody who wants to occupy it. It will be interesting to see what sort of a wait list develops. I know there’s room for many more such accommodations in town,” he said.
The 42 one-bedroom apartments are currently under construction on the north end of Geikie St. under a $3.2 million affordable housing grant.
Eligible applicants must have an income of less than $36,000 a year, and Shepherd expects as summer approaches, there will be more demand for the apartments.
“I think it’s going to work out well for MPL in terms of the fact that they will always have somebody to put in when there is a unit ready to be occupied,” he said. |
