The Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay is due through town in mid-March and when it arrives, Jasper resident Kim Cameron will be one of the local medal carriers.
“Rick Hansen carried the original Man in Motion medal with him when he did the world tour and now the Canadian Mint has made a commemorative one,” Cameron said. “So it’ll be the same medal that is passed on to each runner all the way from the east coast to the west coast.”
The commemorative medal began its cross-country journey on Aug. 24, 2011 from Cape Spear, Nfld. The anniversary relay is retracing the Canadian leg of the original Man in Motion World Tour, in which Hansen travelled more than 40,000 kilometres in his wheelchair, passing through 34 countries over a period of 26 months. His effort helped raise $26 million for spinal cord research.
The anniversary tour, by contrast, will see thousands of people “in motion,” including Cameron, who has been told she will cover a span of 250 metres within the Town of Jasper.
“It’s a huge distance,” she joked.
Length of the journey notwithstanding, Cameron wanted to get involved in whatever way she could, so she applied to be a participant and was accepted. In the meantime she also plans to collect funds for the Rick Hansen Foundation while she works at Everest Outdoor Store in Jasper.
“I’m just going to have a little change jar,” she said.
The commemorative medal is scheduled to be making its way between Regina and Moose Jaw, Sask., today and is set to arrive in Jasper on March 18.
“They’re starting it at the train bridge on the east side of town and then it’ll come in and I think it goes up Cedar, or Pyramid Lake Road, and then it’s going to the Activity Centre,” Cameron said.
After that it’s off to Prince George, B.C. on its way, ultimately, to Vancouver on May 22.
