HINTON:

Page Turner Book Club

Read the latest book and join the Page Turner Book Club for a discussion of what you liked or didn’t like about it.

Currently the club is reading The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom and the next discussion is set for Jan. 16 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Hinton Municipal Library.

The discussion is open to everyone and copies of the book can be ordered through the library.

The Hinton Municipal Library is located at 803 Switzer Dr.

Buzzy Bee Readers Storytime

Registration for the Buzzy Bee Readers Storytime and the first session of the season will take place at the Hinton Municipal Library on Jan. 17.

This session runs on Tuesdays or Thursdays each week for 10 weeks and is open to children aged three to five who can participate in storytime, finger plays and other kinds of educational fun, unaccompanied by a parent.

The Jan. 17 session begins at 1:30 p.m. and there is a per-session fee.

All about harlequin ducks

The Foothills Research Institute will hold the next edition of its Brown Bag Lunch Speaker Series on Jan. 20 at the Hinton Training Centre.

Speaker Beth MacCallum will talk about her research on harlequin ducks, their behaviour and their habitat.

The talk starts at 12:10 p.m. and runs about 45 minutes. Guests are to bring their own lunches to the event, which will take place in Room 134. The Hinton Training Centre is located at 1176 Switzer Dr.

Family Literacy Night

Ronald McDonald will be putting on a storytime and puppet show for young children as part of Family Literacy Night at the Hinton Municipal Library on Jan. 26.

But the evening isn’t just for youngsters. Parents and grandparents are welcome too. Snacks will be provided and there will be prize draws.

The free event runs from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the library.

 

VALEMOUNT:

Valemount Minor Hockey meeting

The Valemount Minor Hockey association will hold a meeting on Thursday, Jan. 12 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Digital photography instruction

The Valemount Learning Centre will hold a series of classes on digital photography beginning Thursday, Jan. 12

The classes are geared towards people who own digital cameras, but aren’t using the devices to their full potential and would like to learn more about the art and science of taking better photographs.

The classes run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 12, 19 and 26.

Snowmobile trails update

The Valemount Area Recreation Development Association provides information and updates on snowmobile trails and conditions in the area throughout the winter.

According to the association’s website, the trails at Allan Creek and Clemina Creek are groomed Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings. Chappell Creek is groomed Thursday evenings and typically run for Friday and Saturday, user numbers depending.

Riders are reminded that, on the Westridge Family Loop, there is active logging in the area until at least the end of February.

The association also reminds riders it is illegal to operate a snowmobile on a plowed road.

 

MCBRIDE:

PAC Meeting

The McBride Secondary School Parent Advisory Council (PAC) will hold a meeting on Monday evening, Jan. 16.

The PAC meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the school library.

The school is located at 1300 Second Ave.

 

High school yearbooks

McBride Secondary School yearbooks are now on sale at the school office.

Customizing of yearbooks is available until Friday, Jan. 21. Yearbooks purchased before Feb. 1 will come at a discounted price. After that the price goes up.

DUNSTER:

Dunster Quilt deadline looms

The deadline for finished blocks to be included in the Dunster Quilt is fast approaching. Blocks must be received by Jan. 31.

Blocks are available for pickup at the Dunster Store.

Proceeds from the sale of raffle tickets for the quilt will go towards a local swim program and a weekly activity day for children during the winter months.
