Kris Kringle is gearing up for another ride through the Rockies on the Santa Claus Express and tickets are now on sale for those wishing to join him.

The eighth annual event – also known simply as the “Santa Train” – is set for Dec. 13 this year, with two departure times: one at 9:30 a.m. and another at 3 p.m.

Each train, operated by VIA Rail, will depart from the Jasper station, head west, turn back and return to Jasper. The ride will last for about an hour and a half with, of course, a guest appearance by Santa along the way. Mr. Claus has been known to hand out goodie bags to his fellow passengers on the train.

After the ride children will also have the chance to have their pictures taken with Santa and enjoy some free hot chocolate.

Sue McCarthy with VIA Rail said the company runs similar Santa Trains in other communities, but it’s up to local volunteers to make it happen. The company provides the train and the fuel while VIA employees donate their time.

In addition to meeting Santa, passengers can expect music and storytelling along the way. Passengers on past Santa Trains have ranged in age from two days to 95 years.

There will be about 170 tickets available for each of the two train rides on Dec. 13, McCarthy said. Previous Santa Trains have sold out but she suggested double-checking before assuming the train is full.

Tickets go on sale today at More Than Mail in Jasper. Tickets will also be available at the train station on Dec. 8 and Dec. 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days.

Train fare is $5 for kids and $10 for adults.

McCarthy said “every cent” raised from the event goes to the 2011 Santas Anonymous Campaign in Jasper, which helps provide toys and food to local families in need during the holidays.
