HINTON:

Armchair Travellers: 

The next installment in this ongoing series of travel presentations at the Hinton Municipal Library takes place on Monday, Nov. 7.

Cindy LeClerq is set to give a presentation titled “Southesk Lake and beyond: a horsepack trip in the Rockies.”

The presentation runs from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and admission is free. Organizers advise that you come early as the room tends to fill up quickly.

Community Basketball: 

The Kingdom Outreach Centre presents “All Stars Community Basketball” on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at the Crescent Valley School Gym.

Participants must bring their own basketballs and the emphasis of the evening will be learning and developing basic skills through drills, activities and games.

There is no registration fee. For more information call Harry or Sheila Unruh at 780-817-2545.

The gym is located at 213 Tamarack Ave.

 

Remembrance Day Garbage Collection Date Change: 

The Town of Hinton advises residents that there will be no garbage collection on Friday, Nov. 11 due to Remembrance Day.

Garbage normally collected on Friday will be collected on Thursday, Nov. 10. Town officials ask that residents put their bins out by 7:30 a.m. with the wheels furthest away from the curb.

The West Yellowhead Regional Landfill will be closed on Nov. 11. Winter hours are now in effect for the landfill which is normally open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and closed on Sundays and holidays.

VALEMOUNT:

Valemount Community Theatre: 

Company Jump, a comedic musical theatre show that highlights the life and music of the most famous all-female trio in history – the Andrews Sisters – is coming to the theatre on Saturday, Nov. 12.

The Andrews Sisters kept allied forces entertained during the Second World War.

“Even today, their music and its upbeat, hopeful air serves not only as a nostalgic reminder of so-called simpler times, but also as a poignant hallmark as world events find us again pining for more peaceful days,” states the show’s billing.

The Crash Test Dummies show that had been set for Dec. 3, meanwhile, has been cancelled, according to the theatre’s website. The Dec. 14 Doc Walker show is still on, however, tickets are sold out.

All performances are held at the theatre in the Valemount Secondary School at 201 Ash St.

 

Harvest Supper: 

The fall harvest supper takes place on Friday, Nov. 4 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Valemount Senior Citizens Hall.

The annual event is put on by the Valemount Anglican/United Church. Call Pat Bennett at 250-566-4179 for tickets.

The Valemount Senior Citizens Hall is located at 1300 Main St.

 

Valemount Idol: 

Cash prizes up for grabs for those who put their talent on display during the Valemount Idol competition on Friday, Nov. 4.

Participants are encouraged to show off their abilities in everything from singing to dancing to breathing fire, according to the billing, which states: “Whatever it is, we want to see it!”

First prize is $600, with $200 going to the second-place winner and $100 for third-place.

It all goes down at the Valemount Community Theatre starting at 7 p.m.

Maria’s Community Book Fair: 

The work of local artists and writers will be on display starting Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Valemount Secondary School during the Community Book Fair.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

There will be a full concession and proceeds go to Meals on Wheels.

 

Candidates forum: 

A forum for candidates running for municipal office for Nov. 7 at the Valemount Comunity Theatre starting at 7 p.m.

 

MCBRIDE:

Addresses needed for invitations: 

Next June, the Village of McBride will be holding an 80th anniversary celebration and village officials are seeking addresses to add to its invitation mailing list.

The celebration will be held the weekend of June 16 and 17, 2012, in conjunction with Pioneer Days and Adventure Weekend.

The village is currently collecting mailing and email addresses to send out invites. If you have relatives or know of anyone that should be invited, you are asked to drop off the addresses at the village office or email glenda@mcbride.ca

The deadline for address submissions is Dec. 1. 

 

Candidates forum: 

Candidates running for municipal office are set to square off in an all-candidates forum on Wednesday, Nov. 9

The event is to take place at 7 p.m. at the Roundhouse Theatre, located at 1300 Second Ave., in the high school.

 

DUNSTER:

Community Family Dance:

This regular event takes place the first Saturday of every month from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Dunster Community Hall.

Participants can learn a few new dances each month, including the waltz, fox-trot, two-step, three varieties of polkas, schottische, cha-cha, and Virginia Reel.

Dance instruction runs from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in short sessions throughout the evening. 

Dancing runs from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. with a break for potluck snacks, coffee and visiting at 9 p.m. There is an admission fee. 

Proceeds go to Dunster Community Association. Everyone is asked to help with the cleanup. Call Pete at 250-968-4334 for more information.

 

Songbirds Travelling Music School:

This wandering music school is coming to the Robson Valley Nov. 15-17.

Songbirds has a rotating staff of musicians and focuses on “inspiring the human spirit through creative and musical skill-sharing.”

Current staff include Joanna Chapman-Smith (voice), Katheryn Petersen (accordion) and Mat Martin (claw-hammer banjo, guitar). 

Workshops will be offered for all levels and ages at flexible times during the three days in November at the Dunster Fine Arts School.

The deadline for signing up for workshops is Nov. 5.

The performers will also take part in the first concert of the Dunster Schoolhouse Concert Series on Nov. 17, starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
