Can’t get to the bins? Has your well-managed pile of scrap paper and plastic containers taken on monstrous proportions? Fear not, for the Jasper Recycling Society is now offering house calls. For the low, low price of $10 per month, Jasperites can sign up to have the green team drop by twice a month and clear out any and all recyclable materials. Well, almost any.
“I don’t think we’ll be picking up old couches or things like that,” said Laurent Bolduc, a member of the recycling society and the man behind this campaign to do right by the earth, door-to-door.
All of the recyclables normally desposited in the green bins are fair game, along with old paint, motor oil and even car batteries, provided that the materials are in appropriate containers when the pick-up occurs.
Last week was the first time that Bolduc and his fellow recyclers were out collecting from the five households that have already signed up for the service. The organizers are hoping that their list of pick-ups will grow in the months to come.
“My theory is that in about three months, or maybe less it will have grown quite a bit,” said Bolduc. The goal, he said, is to provide local not-for-profit groups a chance to earn some much needed cash by participating in the program.
“The idea is that it generates enough funds so that organizations can take one Thursday do the recycling and have the money from that week,” he said. In addition to the fees for regular collection, people can donate bottles and cans and the groups involved will get those funds too.
People who want to take advantage of the recycling service can call 852-2712 and leave their name and address. Pick ups happen on Thursdays. Organizations interested in participating in the fundraising initiative can call the same number. |
