Jason Pierre Medig, the local man facing trial in Hinton over his alleged involvement in an incident of vandalism against Jasper’s municipal water wells last summer, was charged with a separate count of mischief in Jasper court last Thursday. Medig asked to withold his plea on this new matter until March 23, to allow him the opportunity to consult with his lawyer. The charges were laid in connection to the deliberate opening of several fire hydrants in December of 2005. Four other individuals have admitted to being involved in the vandalism, but were not formally charged. An apology letter from the group can be found on page 6 of the Fitzhugh.

“I find it nice that these kids are willing to step up and make a public apology,” said Sgt. Dave Maludzinski of the Jasper RCMP.

Steven Valcourt of Jasper was fined $800 for failing to remain at the scene of an accident. The local construction worker was charged after police received a complaint of a motor vehicle accident early in the morning of January 7, 2006. It was determined that Valcourt’s vehicle had been involved, but the accused had parked his car in a different location and left the scene.

Judge Norheim told Valcourt that he was treating this offense as if it was an impaired driving conviction, and this was the explanation for the substantial fine.
