As temperatures rise and the ski season draws to a close, a group of locals want to get the community up to Marmot Basin for one last hurrah on April 21.
The annual fun race and party event dubbed Fun, Fat and... has been happening every ski season since 1978. In recent years, the race has been dedicated to recently deceased Jasperites. This year, the event will honour Trevor Mooney.
The focus of the day is on good times, said Brian Skehill, one of the main organizers, who has been involved with the event ever since it began.
“It’s a fun day, a fun event for the whole community,” he said. “Just come up and have a beer for Trev.”
The festivities will last a full 12 hours when all is said, done and drunk. Registration opens at the Eagle Chalet at 10 a.m., with a lunch to follow at noon. The active part of the day begins in the afternoon, with a dual slalom course down S-Turns. This easy terrain makes the skiing accessible to all, Skehill said.
And what would a day on the slopes be without some aprés-ski? Anyone who signs up for the event can partake in a reception and party at the Athabasca Hotel which begins at 6 p.m.
People planning to participate are encouraged to pre-register at Totem Ski Shop, the Source for Sports or Edge Control. All three businesses are offering $10 rentals for the day. The price includes skis, boots and poles. |
