One of Canada’s most well known faces in journalism will make his way to Hinton on Oct. 5.
As part of Community Futures West Yellowhead’s (CFWY) Regional Celebration, Peter Mansbridge will give the keynote speech, drawing on the world leaders he’s interviewed and his experience as CBC’s chief correspondent.
“This is our third regional celebration and we really wanted someone as high-calibre as we’ve had in the past,” said Leadership West Yellowhead (LWY) Program Co-ordinator Nancy Robbins. “We had a lot of fun discussing it with our board and Peter’s name came up a lot.”
Robbins, who explained that the celebration is a fundraising event, said she was ecstatic when CFWY received confirmation of Mansbridge’s participation in the celebration.
“It was such a great feeling that a small region like West Yellowhead could bring in someone with such a national presence,” she said in a recent release. “He is literally the voice of the nation and he is an amazing journalist in my opinion. He asks the questions that we (as regular citizens) would ask, and it is going to be great to hear his perspective.”
Appropriately, Mansbridge will talk about leadership: what it takes and how it can be achieved, whether in politics, academia or business.
Robbins said that the event will also see two Jasper youths attending – winners of a youth essay contest facilitated by LWY. The two youths will be invited to a reception where they will meet Mansbridge and get to ask him a question, and the Jasper Rotary Club has purchased two tickets for the winners to go to the main event.
“They had to write about what they feel is the biggest issue facing Canadians and how they feel the leaders can address the issue,” said Robbins, adding that the reason LWY held a contest for youth is because they felt it was a great opportunity for them to have a voice. “And that’s coming out a lot in what we’ve seen so far – that they have a voice and they want to be heard.”
Robbins, who had a chance to briefly be a part of a conference call with Mansbridge said he is very down to earth, really interested in the Yellowhead region and he is really looking forward to hearing about the issues that people here face.
“It energized us to hear how positive he was about coming here,” she said, adding that having Mansbridge as keynote speaker has everything to do with the success of the leadership program itself. “It shows what a high-calibre program we have and the high quality of the product we have to offer,” she said.
The evening will include a gourmet dinner, live entertainment and a silent auction featuring a variety of items from generous sponsors, Robbins said. Five lucky winners (tickets sold at the door) will have a chance to meet Mansbridge and get a personally autographed copy of his book.
The regional celebration of leadership takes place Oct. 5 at 5:30 p.m. at the Hinton Centre. For tickets, contact CFWY at 780-865-1224.
LWY is a seven-month program made up of two, two-day retreats and six one-day learning sessions (held monthly). During the sessions, participants will get hands-on experience and practise leadership skills while addressing real issues facing the region.
