Police are still attempting to identify a woman who was struck and killed by a CN train east of Jasper last week.

The incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Wed. Dec. 9 east of the rail bridge in Jasper.

Foul play is not suspected, according to RCMP, however until an exact cause of death is determined, police continue to treat the incident as suspicious.

The RCMP is looking for assistance identifying the woman. She is described as caucasian, in her mid-30s with strawberry blonde hair tied back in a ponytail with a green elastic. Her hair also appears to be dyed orange. She was wearing a white winter jacket, jeans, hiking boots a black balaclava and gloves. A black backpack was discovered near the scene, which police assume also belonged to the woman.

According to Jasper RCMP Staff Sergeant Dave Maludzinski, she appeared to be dressed for the cold weather.

Cpl. Tony Dolhan said tips have been coming in from within and outside of the community in regards to the potential identity of the victim. He encourages anyone with information about the incident or the identity of the woman to call crimestoppers at 1-800-422-8477.

The incident is considered the first rail fatality in more than 30 years in Jasper. RCMP is still investigating the incident and the coroner has yet to determine the cause of death.

Other than stating the rail company was co-operating with the investigation, CN spokesman Kevin Franchuck offered no further details on the accident, but noted counselling is available to CN employees involved in the incident.
