Jasper’s new pedestrian underpass was closed to the public on Sept. 13 and 14 for some minor concrete repairs.
The underpass was re-opened on the morning of Sept. 15, says Ken Quackenbush, director of environmental services. During the closure, pedestrians and cyclists were lined up on either side of the tracks as trains went by throughout the day.
Quackenbush said concrete repairs were made to correct a drainage issue that was identified during the underpass’s first winter. A lack of drainage caused ice to form in the tunnel.
Landscaping work is ongoing at the underpass. Quackenbush said the contractors will be involved with the landscaping for a year, to replace any plants that do not grow.
Also awaiting installation is a trellis on the south side of the underpass. A mirror will be installed on the trellis to correct a blind corner that has become a safety concern for cyclists. |
