The kids will be back in full force, but there will be a noticeable absence in the hallways of Jasper Elementary School this coming fall.
That’s because three long-serving teachers have filed their final report cards and are headed for retirement. Rose Wickstrand, Vonna Arsenault and John Billehaug were each honoured in a brief presentation last week at the Grade 6 Walkdown Ceremony (June 29).
“I’ve been counting down my last times this year,” Wickstrand said in presenting a thank-you
bouquet to the school council, “The last report cards… the last assembly.”
The other retirees did not make presentations and as such had no similar occasion to address the audience. Each was, however, honoured by one of their teaching colleagues and presented with a carved bear.
Connie Sawka, who split Grade 2 teaching duties with Wickstrand, honoured her 32-year career.
“Not only has she been a colleague, she’s been a friend and as the kids will tell you, friends are forever,” Sawka said.
Wickstrand’s leadership touched the entire school community, Sawka said.
“As a master teacher, she touched the lives of many in the community, not just the students.”
Paulette Trottier then saluted the long career of Vonna Arsenault at JES. Arsenault’s first seven years as a teacher in Jasper were spent at the junior/senior high school, but after moving to the elementary school, she proceeded to teach most grade levels.
Arsenault did spend most of her time as a Grade 6 teacher, Trottier added, saying that her love of the profession was evident.
“It’s not hard to believe Mrs. Arsenault when she says that her love of teaching has followed her every step of her career.”
Much like departing high school teacher Angie Lemire, Arsenault grew up in Jasper and attended school here before returning to pursue a life in teaching. She plans to remain in Jasper and spend time with her family here and in Germany.
JES Principal Raymond Blanchette-Dube spoke about John Billehaug’s contributions during a lengthy career in Jasper.
“He used to organize the whole Christmas show before I got here,” Blanchette-Dube said.
“We thank you for the gifts you have given the community though your dedication and professionalism.”
During the course of his thirty-year career in Jasper, Billehaug took time to pursue teaching opportunities in Calgary and Australia, Blanchette-Dube said, adding that Billehaug will now be moving to Calgary to begin his retirement from the teaching profession.
In addition to the three teachers, long-time JES library clerk Loretta Shredwick made her retirement official at the ceremony.
Support staffers Leanne Minton and Pattie Pavlov are also moving on, and were recognized at the event. |
