While the Friends of Jasper National Park is still waiting to complete the final phase of its Discovery Trail project, the organization still put forth enough effort to impress Travel Alberta officials.

The signage project, which involved the municipality, Parks Canada, the business community, volunteers and others, captured the Friends of Tourism award from Travel Alberta.

“Travel Alberta was recognizing the collaboration as much as the final project,” Cesco said. “It also recognizes that we’re a credible organization that gets results.”

The community is still waiting for the final signs to arrive in town, something that should occur any day. The organization has been waiting weeks for the final signs to show up.

“There were quite a few changes to them, but the overall theme and story line is the same.”

The new signs will have additional information to accompany the photographs, and some of the signs on the back side of the bench have been altered considerably from the test panels that stood for two years.

“We received a dozen or so comments, and we caught some things. We found two wrongs that we corrected altogether,” Cesco said.

Once the final signs arrive, the penultimate phase of the $160,000 discovery trail project will be complete, and the organization will begin work on town kiosks.

“We’ll replace signs on kiosks with new interpretative signs this spring. They will be similar in design for other parts of the park, but the sizes will be different.

Three themes run through the signage project, according to Cesco: stewardship, community and culture.

How the next phase will roll out is still in the hands of the board, and Cesco isn’t about to offer any hints.

“We still have to have discussions with the board,” she said.
