Tourist visits up, but revenue sags: report Print

While Parks Canada reports that there were 23,000 more visitors to Jasper National Park in 2009 than 2008, an Alberta Tourism Operator Survey says the community experienced a slow season.

According to the visitation numbers, the beginning of the year was much slower than last, but big numbers in April, July and September helped to bring total visitor numbers for the year back in line with 2008. September numbers were up by 24,000 over 2008, according to Parks Canada.

While numbers currently only reach the end of September the total visitors is up for the year by more than 23,000.

According to the Travel Alberta report, the decline in hotel occupancy resulted in a very competitive market. Thus, aggressive pricing reportedly hurt all businesses, as even those experiencing decent season occupancy did not realize extra revenue for the company.

While hotel operators had a much lower occupancy rate, campground and RV park operators experienced a busier season fuelled by the regional traveller.

Overflow campgrounds were reportedly in higher demand than normal with many of the campgrounds full for the summer.

As suspected, the regional market was the main driver for the season after a significant drop in international and tour-operated visitors.

The report estimated there was a 40 per cent decrease in group tours to JNP which mostly include international travellers.

While respondents in Banff suggested that 2010 would be a rebound season, JNP operators are not as optimistic and instead expect another similar year to 2009.
