A traffic stop turned into a major drug bust for Lake Louise RCMP last week.

RCMP Southern Alberta Traffic Services seized about 150 pounds of Psilocybin, also known as magic mushrooms on Thursday (Oct. 22) on Highway 1 west of Lake Louise.

RCMP were conducting routine traffic duties when they stopped a Chevrolet Silverado pick up truck for equipment violations. An initial investigation with the assistance of a drug detection dog led to the seizure of the drugs.

The Psilocybin seized would yield approximately $700,000 when sold at street value, according to police.

RCMP have charged Shawn Lutz, 27, of Calgary and Scott Gowing, 31, of Calgary, for possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, and trafficking a controlled substance.

Gowing was released by a Justice of the Peace pending a posting of $2,000 cash bail and is scheduled to attend court in Banff on November 16, 2009. Gowing was not known to police before this incident.

Lutz was released by a Justice of the Peace pending a posting of $4,500 cash bail and is also scheduled to appear in court on November 16, 2009. Lutz was known to the police from previous drug investigations.
