Park Wardens from Jasper are assisting in the investigation of an ‘unusual discharge after parks officials were alerted to odd smelling water flowing into Louise Creek in Lake Louise.

Caroline Marion, Townsite manager of Lake Louise and Field said on Sept. 23, water with an odour was found flowing out of a pipe into Louise Creek. The pipe was found below the Chateau Lake Louise, Marion said, and does not affect the actual lake.

Parks officials are expecting a report on the leakage soon, as Jasper wardens have been busy assisting with the investigation.

While the town’s water supply is downstream from the leak, no boil water advisory was issued.

“The town draws its water from an artisan well that is 150 metres deep. There was no boil water advisory nor was there ever any need for one,” Marion said.

Water drawn from the well is already treated by the town’s wastewater treatment plant, Marion said.

Louise creek is a tributary of the Bow River. It is home to several native and non-native species of fish, such as the bull trout, whitefish and eastern brook trout.

Lori Cote, spokesperson with the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise said since the matter is under investigation, she would not comment on the matter. The pipe in question has been redirected.

“There is an investigation by parks and we are leaving it in their hands. We’re working with parks to assist in the investigation,” Cote said.

Parks is also investigating the disappearance of 510,000 cubic metres of water from Lake Louise. Officials discovered a discrepancy between the water taken from Lake Louise, and water flowing back into the iconic body of water.

Marion said the park is letting a new water treatment plant installed by the Chateau Lake Louise to operate for a period of six month to help determine where the water is going.
