To ensure the safety of trail users, a variety of highway pedestrian crossings are currently being installed by Parks Canada.
“Some of the trails that have been implemented over the years have brought trail users to road ways and highways,” said Marcia DeWandel, communications officer for Jasper Trails Project.
The junction of highway 16 and 93A was determined to be the highest pedestrian use in the crossing study conducted in 2006.
Consequently, this will be the only crossing to have a new pedestrian activated light, which will flash so that oncoming traffic are well aware of people crossing the road.
Accompanying the light will be a rumble strip and some speed advisory signs to let vehicles know there is a pedestrian crossing up ahead, said DeWandel.
While the speed limit will not be changed in these areas, the signs will advise motorists to slow down to 50km/h when proceeding through the crossings.
The pedestrian crossings at highway 16 at the Moberly Bridge, and highway 93 at Whistlers Campground will also receive rumble strips and signs.
All of the crossings will have white strips across the road.
