He made the backcountry accessible to people all over the world, pioneered heli-skiing and heli-hiking, and created one of the most successful mountain guiding holiday businesses in Canada.
Hans Gmoser left behind an incredible legacy of 50 years in Canada’s alpine when he died in 2006. On Dec. 4, Chic Scott will present the story of Gmoser’s life at the Amethyst Lodge in Jasper.
Scott himself is an accomplished mountain guide, author, speaker, skier and hiker. He has climbed peaks all over the European Alps and the Canadian Rockies. His most memorable adventures include the first winter ascent of Mount Assiniboine in 1967, the first Jasper to Lake Louise high-level traverse (also in 1967), the north face of the Aiguille du Dru in the French Alps and the Myagdi Matha in 1973. His climb of the Myagdi Matha was the first time a Canadian had reached the summit of a Himalayan mountain. More of Scott’s incredible climbs and accomplishments can be found on his website, www.chicscott.com
Scott’s book, Deep Powder and Steep Rock: The Life of Mountain Guide Hans Gmoser, follows Gmoser’s life with journal entries written by himself throughout his 50 years of mountaineering.
The presentation will begin at 7 p.m. with a book signing to follow. |
