VIA Rail has announced an indefinite 25 per cent discount for Canadian Forces members and veterans just in time for Remembrance Day.
Jasper’s MP and Minister of State (Transport), the Honourable Rob Merrifield made the announcement in Ottawa at the Canadian War Museum on Nov. 1.
He was accompanied by Minister of National Defence, the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Veteran Affairs, The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn and President/CEO of Via Rail, Marc Laliberté.
“Our government is pleased to continue its ongoing partnership with VIA Rail to modernize our rail systems and provide all Canadians with safe and sustainable passenger rail service,” said Minister Merrifield. “With today’s announcement, even more of our Canadian heroes and those who love them will be able to take advantage of this enhanced service.”
The offer includes all currently serving Canadian Forces (CF) members and veterans, as well as up to five family members. The discount will be off of the best available fair. Spokesperson for VIA Rail, Ashley Doyle, said the offer is indefinite, and began on Nov. 1.
“There’s no sign that it’s going to end,” she said.
CF members and veterans can book today, next year or whenever, and receive the best available fair on economy, business or sleeper class. There are no route or date restrictions. Doyle said this allows CF members and their families to plan a vacation, instead of hastily planning a trip to make a deadline.
“We are pleased to honour our Forces’ members by offering this exclusive year-round discount,” said Laliberté in a statement. “This underscores the contributions members of Canada’s military and its veterans have made to our country since its earliest days.”
Doyle said the offer will allow CF members to see the country they have helped shape and strengthen.
“Everyone’s well aware of the Canadian Forces’ contribution to our society,” she said.
Minister Merrifield said it was the perfect time of year to announce such an offer, as the country prepares for Remembrance Day.
“It is my hope that many members of the Canadian Forces – both serving and retired – will take advantage of this opportunity,” said Minister Merrifield. |
