High school career events help students plan their futures

Some of Jasper’s graduating students pictured themselves living in dorms and attending lectures at Monday night’s career fair in the high school gym.

Nineteen organizations, including post-secondary schools from across the province, set up shop with displays and information handouts to interested youth.

Herb Robinson, part-time counsellor, said the high school undertakes a number of initiatives to expose graduating students to post-secondary institutions, including both inviting speakers to the school and taking kids on visits to campuses.

Counsellors from the Jasper Employment Centre, who had a booth at the fair, interviewed young people who work around town about their careers for a slideshow to present to classes at the high school.

Joshua Michie, a design student who graduated from Grant MacEwan’s College earlier this year, said getting the chance to talk to prospective students has been the most rewarding part of his program so far.

Sgt. Pauline Timmons, recruiter for the Royal Military College, said she asks students what their strengths are.
