The Honourable MP Rob Merrifield, Minister of State (Transport), was in Jasper on Sept. 10 to officially open the newly revamped Mount Edith Cavell Day Use Area.
The upgrades, which were done thanks to Canada’s Economic Action Plan, cost $4 million altogether. Merrifield said he was happy to report the project was completed on budget and ahead of the projected deadline.
“This project was on budget and four days early,” he said.
Each year about 180,000 people travel the 11-kilometre Edith Cavell Road, which has now been completely repaved.
“That pavement’s going to be there for a long time,” Merrifield said.
The minister commended the construction crews, who were on hand for the opening, and praised their dedication to the project.
“They did a tremendous job,” he said.
The upgrades will allow more people to view the iconic mountain, which is part of a political riding Merrifield said he is happy to represent.
“I argue with my colleagues over who has the most beautiful riding in Canada.”
Merrifield made the announcement and cut the ribbon opening the day use area, on behalf of federal Environment Minister Jim Prentice, who was unable to attend the Jasper event. Prentice is the minister responsible for Parks Canada.
“Improvements in this area provide visitors with a safer drive, places to park and a chance to experience the beauty of the mountains in Jasper National Park,” said Minister Prentice in a recent press release. “By investing in the infrastructure of Canada’s national parks and national historic sites, our government is helping to preserve and protect these special places that are symbols of our country and tangible connections to our history.”
The upgrades included renovations to the Path of the Glacier trail and the creation of parking spaces. To date, the Economic Action Plan has contributed $20 million to Jasper-area projects, including upgrades to the Jasper Activity Centre. Merrifield said tourism is one of the most important industries in Canada. It contributes $71 billion annually to Canada’s GDP.
Also in attendance at the event were representatives from Parks Canada and local dignitaries, including Mayor Richard Ireland and members of Town Council. |
