Family members providing support for loved ones with long-term illnesses have a new outlet to discuss their feelings and take care of themselves in Jasper. 

A support group for caregivers is being held on the fourth Wednesday of every month by Community Outreach Services and Alberta Health Services. 

Tracey Jackson, senior outreach worker and Laurie-Ann Reddick, a therapist also with community outreach services, have held three meetings so far for people dealing with illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, dementia or a physical disability in the family. 

The group allows people to share their thoughts and feelings, and learn tips about taking care of themselves while aiding a loved one.

“People that have come along have found it helpful to share their feelings,” Jackson said. “(It’s) giving them the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings.”

The main focus is giving caregivers the chance to take care of themselves in a difficult situation. Jackson said people caring for loved ones often put the needs of their sick family member ahead of their own, and completely forget about taking care of themselves. 

“It’s just really about the importance of self-care,” Jackson said. 

The group is being developed as the attendees need it, she said. “It’s going to be guided very much by what the groups want.” That means if the caregivers want more time with therapists, guest speakers can be brought in.

The meetings are completely confidential, and are held in the Gathering Room at the Alpine Summit Seniors Lodge by Jackson and Reddick. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 25th at 7 p.m.
