Valemount tagline and logo released at innaugural Winter Festival
Even Jasperites got in on the fun of Valemount’s first annual winter carnival last weekend, taking honours in first place of the triathlon in the relay category.
The inaugrual festival will be held each year as part of Valemount’s continued development to market itself as a tourist destination, and also features events such as a triathlon, concert, and snowmobile poker run.
zwith the Winter Olympics, as the torch will go through Valemount the last weekend of January.
The town’s recently unveiled logo and tagline were also on display throughout the weekend’s festivities.
Riette Kenkel, marketing coordinator for the Village of Valemount, said the new tagline and logo were developed because it was felt there were too many messages being used to describe the “feel” of the town. “We wanted to come up with something that would capture the feeling of Valemount, which is, ‘Let the mountains move you’,” she said. “The village was still really wanting to stick to the small town feel but at the same time to increase tourism a little bit, a bit at a time kind of thing.”
The new logo and tagline have already been used for the production of the Getaway Guide in conjunction with the Edmonton Journal and will soon be seen at the main entrance of the town.
Kenkel is developing brand kits for local businesses. “That way they can use the logo and tag line in some of their advertising and help with some of the language that we’re wanting to use,” she said.
Funding for the new marketing strategies has come from a hotel room tax (two per cent on all hotel rooms) that has been collected since August 2007.
The Village of Valemount is also classed as a resort community, which means the B.C. government gives additional funding equivalent to 50 per cent of the hotel room tax, or one per cent.
“So we’re able to use that to help with revitalizing some parts of town that could be for tourism,” Kenkel added. |
