Students raise money for Juvenile Diabetes

As part of Kids Helping Kids month, young Jasperites had the opportunity to buy cupcakes with green icing in coordination with St. Patrick’s Day last Tuesday, March 17.

For just one shiny quarter, students at Jasper Elementary School could purchase two treats from the stalls set up in the halls during their recess.

Organized by the student council, the event raised $73.40, which will be matched by one of the parents from the school and go towards Juvenile Diabetes. The cause, selected by students earlier in the year, touches home for many of them as student council member Chase Fogerty Landsman has the disease.

The school is also collecting pop can tabs to donate to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton, which is where Fogarty Landsman said he goes “every month to check out what’s going on with my diabetes.”

Autumn Dolhan, vice president of student council, and Fogarty Landsman said that the students thoroughly enjoyed being able to purchase the sweets which is an event put on every month in an effort to raise money for charity.

According to Dolhan, the student council is responsible for organizing a range of events, including the wildly successful Dress like Mr. B day and a play in late February that depicted “how diabetes works.”

“Everybody had to come in and one person was sugar and another person was pancreas,” said Fogarty Landsman adding that sometimes he shares his experience with other children by teaching them about “what I have to do” to monitor his diabetes.

Both students agreed that it was a good way to create awareness amongst the students and also help out the cause by raising some money.

Jasperites have until the end of April to collect their pop tabs and drop them in at the Jasper Elementary School reception desk.
