It’s spring in Valemount

Birds singing is a definitive sign that spring is in the air, so what better way to celebrate it than a whole weekend dedicated to all things birding.

Next weekend, Friday May 29 to Sunday May 31, the Village of Valemount will be celebrating nature in some slightly different ways that are designed to attract not only avid bird watchers, but anyone who enjoys the outdoors.

“It’s a stop and smell the roses kind of approach,” said Riette Kenkel, marketing coordinator for the village of Valemount, who admits that bird watching is a “misunderstood past time.”

Don’t let the name fool you though; Valemount Adventures in Birding is far more than just a celebration of the natural birds flying around the area. On top of catching a glimpse of a red-tailed hawk or great horned owl, there’s plenty happening for every age group and pass time.

“We have this ecological wonder right here so that’s why we’re celebrating around it,” Kenkel said.

The program offers people a range of guided hikes, bikes, horseback rides and canoe trips.

All these activities are not only free, but aim to “make more people aware of all the birds that are around us” according to Kenkel. 

“Everywhere you go, no matter what you’re doing ... birds are all around you,” she said, adding that people shouldn’t feel like they need to bring the binoculars and could just come along for the activities. 

Visitors are invited to purchase Robson Valley Eco Guides, which they can track their bird sightings in throughout the weekend, but will also be a handy reference guide for the local trails, plants, hikes and animals that people will come across all weekend.
