One impaired driving charge during long weekend Print

A chilly long weekend didn’t deter Jasper residents and visitors from indulging in a few too many drinks.

“There were a lot of liquor offences, and most of those were in town,” said RCMP Cpl. Tony Dolhan. “But the weekend went really well.”

RCMP reported one impaired driver on May 16, in Jasper - the only impaired ticket issued over the weekend. While the local detachment took part in road safety week, no 24-hour licence suspensions or fatalities occurred over the weekend.

Cpl. Dolhan said there have been eight liquor offences issued this month, and estimates five occured over the weekend. He notes, however, that every incident doesn’t necessarily result in a ticket.

“We can’t count the warnings. If we see some people with an open bottle (of alcohol), we ask them to pour it out.”

RCMP also reported that a man was arrested for attempting to break into a home in Jasper. The man, who is from out of town, has been charged with attempted break and enter and assault. According to Cpl. Dolhan, the man was attempting to get into a residence he thought was his. Alcohol was a factor in the incident, he said.

Parks Canada reported no incidents at the campgrounds.
