Snow shocks sun seekers Print

So this is summer in Jasper.

Long weekend revelers were greeted with 20 centimetres of snow Tuesday morning, as weekend sun made way for a winter embrace.

After a comfortable Sunday, Jasper bustled with campers looking to escape the cold Monday, as temperatures dipped below freezing through the night. Jasper National Park said campgrounds were about 75 per cent full during the weekend, which is typical for this time of year.

Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for the park on Tuesday, which was lifted by late afternoon.

The snowfall caused Parks Canada to issue an avalanche warning for many of its trails, as accumulation created dangerous conditions on many trails around Jasper.

And while the snowfall came as a shock to some visitors, it is in line with recent weather trends. Jasper had a centimetre of snow on the ground in 2008 on the long weekend, and three centimetres of snow on the ground in 2007 at this time.

According to Environment Canada, temperatures will continue to fluctuate throughout the weekend, reaching a high of 20 degrees C during the day, and a low of zero degrees. Sunday will see a high of 19 degrees C, and a low of 3 degrees C.
