One small step for waste reduction Print

The Lobstick Lodge is helping to reduce the 3 million kilograms of waste from Jasper that go to the Hinton landfill each year by providing customers with compostable products.

In an effort to make their Seasons Cafe a zero-waste establishment, the hotel has pent many months trying to organize compostable cutlery, take away cups, containers, plastic bags and cello wrap and is even in search of a compostable pen to date stamp their products.

Brian Higginson, manager of the Lobstick Lodge, said that even if the goods did end up in the regular waste stream, the products would break down in about 120 days.

He also said that the new environment-friendly products were now comparable in price with the previous non-green products that the cafe had been using.

Mountain Park Lodges (MPL) also received the municipalities 2009 Environmental Stewardship Award for waste reduction at the council meeting on Tuesday, June 2.

The award recognized the Lobstick’s improvements as well as MPL’s ongoing commitment to the environment, which include providing recycling bins in each guest room, lobby and staff accommodation; using the municipalities composting program; and using a BikeTown bike to deliver products between hotel kitchens.
