For the past 11 years, the Jasper Film Club has been bringing movies from the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) to present to local audiences, and next month it will continue the tradition with a screening of the espionage thriller The Debt.
The film, set in 1997, centres around three Mossad secret agents who tracked down a Nazi war criminal in the 1960s. Once retired, two of the agents receive some shocking news about the third and the plot develops across two different time periods.
Directed by John Madden and starring Helen Mirren, Tom Wilkinson and CiarĂ¡n Hinds, the movie received largely positive reviews, with a 76-per-cent “fresh” rating on the aggregate review site Rotten Tomatoes.
And while not all the critics liked it, Chris Garnham of the Jasper Film Club is a fan. He said the club usually tries to bring in Canadian films but decided The Debt was not one to miss.
“We don’t normally do American films,” he said, “but this is a good title that’s available, so I was able to jump on that one.”
Like many of the films that the club brings in from the TIFF, this one was made available through a service aimed at smaller communities like Jasper.
“There is an organization within TIFF called ‘The Circuit’ and we belong to that,” Garnham explained. “The Circuit’s perspective and purpose is to bring films from the TIFF to smaller communities across the country.”
The Jasper Film Club “often” gets films from The Circuit, but also brings movies to town through other means, he added. The club typically screens these films on the first Thursday of the month, he said, usually starting in October and running until April.
The Debt will be shown at the Chaba Theatre on Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m. |
