The Jasper Film Club is changing things up for the 2011/12 season, by hosting a mini movie fest to launch their season.

The club will be showing three different movies from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1, one per night. The Sept. 30 screening will be a midnight madness horror flick.

On Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m. Meek’s Cutoff will be shown at the Chaba Theatre. The movie is about a three-family wagon train that becomes lost while being guided by a man named Stephen Meek.

The midnight movie will play at exactly 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 1, and will be announced at a later date.

The final movie of the mini film fest will be Beginners, which is the story of a young man who is delivered two shocking bits of news by his father.

Memberships to the film club are available at the screenings, or at Tekarra Color.

The film club got a huge boost from the provincial government on Sept. 16, when MLA Robin Campbell presented member Bob Covey with a $5,000 cheque to help purchase a digital projector. The club applied for the funding in 2010 for the screen, and is now moving forward with the purchase. Covey said the screen will be a great addition to the club because they will be able to partner with other organizations in town. The club applied for the funding with the name “Small Screens, Big Opportunities.”

Covey said one example of how the screen could be used is to lend it out or partner with area ski clubs to host fundraising movie nights. The screen will be a high-quality digital projector that can play DVDs.

“It’s going to be a nice piece of equipment,” Covey said.

Campbell said the new equipment will be a great way to show off what the West Yellowhead region’s many organizations are up to.

“It showcases what our organizations are doing in our communities,” he said. “Lots goes on here that people don’t know about.”
