The Boob Tour is stopping in Jasper on Sept. 25. Yes, it will be funny, and no it won’t be a variety of teenaged mammary jokes, despite the suggestive name.
James Uloth, comedian and founder of the Boob Tour, has hit some of the largest comedy festivals in the world, but decided to use his funny bone for good last year.
Uloth decided to launch the tour after his friend lost his mother to breast cancer. He originally started selling T-shirts and stickers to help out the cause, but realized after a year that he had only raised a few hundred dollars. He wanted to do more.
Originally from Hinton, Uloth launched the Boob Tour with renowned comedians that come out to raise money for each town on the tour.
“It really took off, you know,” Uloth said. “Unfortunately everybody’s been affected by cancer.”
It’s been a year, and thousands of dollars have been raised and left behind at each tour stop.
“It’s been super great,” Uloth said.
It was important to Uloth that the money earned at each event stays as local as possible. In the case of Jasper, the money raised will benefit the Jasper Cancer Action and Support Group.
“(The money) is staying right in Jasper – I like it when that happens,” Uloth said.
If there is no proper support group set up, the Boob Tour helps get one kick-started.
“A lot of time there’s some money that can start a support group,” Uloth said. “Our first priority when we get to town is to try to stay as local as possible.”
The money goes towards support rather than research, because Uloth feels there are plenty of fundraisers targeting research, but cancer patients often have other needs when they are diagnosed. Support, resources and more can be accessed through local groups like the Jasper Cancer Action and Support Group.
The Jasper stop will feature five talented comedians; Ron Josol has performed all over the world, and his footprint has been left on many Canadian television programs such as Much Music’s Video on Trial. Tracey MacDonald is a winner of Star Search and has performed on familiar comedy stages such as the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, and at many U.S. comedy clubs and festivals. More on MacDonald can be found online at www.traceymacdonald.net. Allison Lane is a breast cancer survivor who documented her entire journey as a single woman facing the disease. More information on Lane can be found online at www.chem-ho.com. Greg Kettner started his career in 2005 after he was dared to go on stage. Since then Kettner has performed across the country. He has also helped raise over $20,000 for various charities. The final performer is Uloth himself, who has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and appears regularly on satellite radio.
“We’re all accomplished headliners,” Uloth said.
The show that hits Jasper will be a true comedy show, however there will be a bit of information on cancer related causes available.
“It’s not designed to be a 90 minute lecture,” Uloth said. He estimates it is 99 per cent comedy.
The show will take place at the Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre’s Banquet Room at 7 p.m., and there will be a selection of hors d’oeuvres prepared by the Sawridge chefs. The Boob Tour will also hit Hinton on Sept. 24 at the Hinton Centre. Proceeds will benefit the Hinton Healthcare Foundation. |
