Professional paddlers from across the country appeared in Jasper, for the launch of a new kayaking movie on Monday, Sept. 7.
Valley High, a movie that features 12 paddlers who travel the globe, but return to the Ottawa Valley each year, features footage from Indonesia, New Zealand, Chile and Mexico.
“It’s a group of friends that every year, we travel all over the world and come back to the Ottawa Valley,” said director Tyler Fox, from the Ottawa Valley. “Collectively, we go to some pretty cool places.”
All of the paddlers in the video are sponsored, and also features Jasper paddler Rob Staneland, who appears in a few segments.
This is Fox’s first film project, however several paddlers helped edit the video. The 45 minute video includes several different styles.
“This is my first big project. We have a website, bottoms up kayaking, where we do web updating to show the rivers we go on. But this is the first time we’ve compiled it,” Fox said.
After the launch party at the Downstream, the paddlers went to tackle Beauty Creek.
“It’s known as the run that stands out here. Right now, if there’s enough water, that’s the one.”
Many Ottawa Valley paddlers end up in Jasper, Fox said, as the rivers out west offer a little more than Ottawa.
“There’s better paddling. The rivers are more beautiful, but it’s more technical. It’s easier to learn in the Ottawa Valley, because you have the warm water and it’s not as full on.”
