It’s been a few weeks since JAG stripped the walls of their Brushfire Gallery for a fall cleaning, but things will be packed on Nov. 26, for the third annual Upcycle opening, that kicks off the winter season.
Upcycle is a yearly event where artists create pieces out of recycled materials to show just what can be done with things that would usually be thrown away. The event will happen during Moonlight Madness, so chilly shoppers can pop in for a look at the pieces and enjoy the show.
Chairperson of the Jasper Artist’s Guild, John Janzen, said they expect to see about 10 to 12 pieces when the gallery re-opens. For this special annual show, friends and family of JAG members can bring pieces to display.
“We had a great time last year,” he said.
Upcycle is unique in that it is more about celebrating recycling, not making money off the sale of pieces.
“Although there are prices on the stuff, it’s not really about that,” Janzen said.
In addition to the art, there will be food, a cash bar and live music by Sam Heine.
“Art galleries are all about openings,” Janzen said.
The show will run from Nov. 26 to 28, and Dec. 4 to 5. The gallery opening will begin at 7 p.m. and run until 10 p.m.
After Upcycle, JAG’s winter season will begin. Janzen could not confirm what artists and shows will be visiting throughout the winter, but says usually they have between four and five a season. A number of artists have applied and are awaiting confirmation.
JAG will also host a number of workshops in between each show. Workshops can’t happen when there is art on the walls, due to the potential for damage to the pieces.
Janzen said they are working on an initiative to get youth that are new to Jasper involved in the workshops and the gallery.
