Jasper is the place to be for live music this month. Many acts have hit stages all over town in November, and the end of the month sees no slowdown in the live tunes.
Maria in the Shower will be performing at Evil Dave’s Grill at 8 p.m. on Nov. 25. They will then move on to Dunster to play at the Dunster Fine Arts School for a fund-raising event for the newly re-opened school. The show in Dunster starts at 7 p.m., on Nov. 26.
This is Maria’s first time through Jasper. The band is expecting their new album to launch in March 2011. Their last recording was released in 2009.
The band plays a wide range of styles. Drummer Todd Biffard said the styles they stick to are folk, swing, rockabilly, samba and gypsy soul.
“We draw inspiration from the Vaudeville era and deliver a show that is a contemporary cabaret of sorts, with a variety of music and a visual intrigue,” he said.
Biffard is joined in the band by Martin Reisle on guitar, trombone and vocals; Jack Garton on accordion, trumpet and vocals and Brendon Hartley on bass and vocals.
The Dunster show is a rare opportunity for Maria in the Shower to help out a good cause.
“We receive more than 30 requests per year to play fundraiser shows,” Biffard said. “We’d love to play them all, but time and cost just doesn’t make it possible.”
They got involved thanks to friends Shara Gustafson and Seth MacDonald in the Robson Valley band Mamaguroove.
“They do so many great things for their local community, and for the community of musicians across the north of B.C.,” said Biffard.
Mamaguroove will perform at the Jasper in January festivities in 2011. |
