Indie label Urbnet bringing Canadian talent to Atha B
Record label and online magazine Urbnet is bringing some of the country’s preeminent hip-hop talent to Jasper’s Atha-B Nite Club.
With its beginnings in the online publishing industry, Urbnet has morphed into a powerhouse indie hip-hop record label with “a deep catalogue” of music, said Kyle Lundar, the tour’s manager.
The opening act, rapper Manafest, aka Chris Greenwood, will be followed by D-Sisive, DJ Law and Moka Only on the Atha-B stage.
Moka Only, formerly of the trio Swollen Members, is promoting the release of his second solo album under the Urbnet label, Carrots and Eggs. He’s also well known for his collaboration with Canadian artist Nelly Furtado on the track Breathe, from her album Unsorted.
Back with the album The Book, after a six year hiatus marred by personal tragedy and struggle, D-Sisive, aka Derek Christoff, drew his influence for this album from another worn soul, Brian Wilson, of Beach Boys fame. D-Sisive will be releasing a new album come March, entitled Let the Children Die.
DJ Law, a “crazy dude,” according to Lundar, set himself afloat with his mixtape series and prolific touring schedule. He has opened for the dean of hip-hop, Dr. Dre, as well as 50 Cent and Rakim.
But this show isn’t the cliché “gangsta’ hip-hop,” Lundar said. “It will be traditional straight-ahead mid-90’s hip-hop with a good message.”
