JAG show highlights the ‘art’ of recycling?
Plastic bags, styrofoam and musk ox poop are all works of art at Upcycle, the new show on display at the Brushfire Gallery in Jasper’s old firehall.
Called a creative celebration of reuse and recycling, the show is what came of curator Claude Boocock’s desire to do something “funky.”
All pieces in the show are made using old bits of just about anything. Louise Jarry submitted a piece of paper she made out of musk ox “poop” and Di Ward spent hours glue-gunning plastic bottles and their caps to strings to make a hanging design.
“I just love it,” said Boocock. “I think it’s so much fun to do things like this. At this time of year it’s quiet, and nice to be less conservative. It brings out the creativity of our members.”
As she set up just hours before the opening on Nov. 14, Boocock also pointed out pieces made of auto body metal and a heap of plastic bags wound with Christmas lights. Her contribution to the show is a painting done on old upholstery fabric, inspired by a photo in an issue of Vogue from the 1960s.
It’s something different, Boocock said, “instead of an old, white canvas.”
For Friday night’s opening, Peccadillo, musical pair Greg Deagle and Michael Flisak, supplied the evening’s tunes, using a variety of instruments to suit the jumble theme. The show runs for two weekends, open Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. through Nov. 23. ? |
