Local photographer’s work on display at Coco’s
Photographer Alisen Charlten held her first ever show opening Monday night at Coco’s CafĂ©, boasting a stunning selection from her growing portfolio.
The 26-year-old’s passion for photography, which developed in the darkroom of her high school, combined with her love of writing led her to study journalism in college. Charlten worked for several visual media publications, including both newspapers in Jasper, before getting into shooting weddings and special events and eventually starting her own business, Arc Photography.
Though her interests and strengths have led her in different directions, she always wound up behind the viewfinder of a camera. “I couldn’t stay away from photography, I loved it too much,” she said at the opening Dec. 1, adding she appreciates the chance to put more of her focus on photography.
“I find it satisfying to have it up and get some feedback,” she said.
The photos on the walls at Coco’s show Charlten’s talent for nature and scenic photography, including shots of Pyramid Mountain and Lac Beauvert, though her interest is diverse. Weddings and portraits are a big part of her business, and she said she likes travel and outdoor adventure as well.
“Variety,” she said. “I love variety.”
Not that being in Jasper National Park doesn’t help, especially when it comes to shooting weddings. “It makes it very inspiring,” she said. “And the type of people who come here are usually laid back, so you can be more creative and really do something great. It might not be the same for me somewhere else.”
Charlten moved to Jasper in 2005, and started up Arc Photography in 2007. Her images will be on display at Coco’s until Feb. 2. |
