The Grave Mistakes aren’t living up to their name.

Having just released a blistering new album, and coming off of a successful tour in British Columbia, the band is doing a lot of things right in the lead up to their CD release party at the Atha-B on July 17.

The Grave Mistakes, which consists of Jasperites Brad Graves, Hell-Billie and Jamie the Skin Carver Baldwin, are stoked with the quality of their first full CD, which captures the psycho-billy energy and mayhem of the live show.

“The album captures the high energy we have, but it’s a little bit more layered,” Graves said.

“It is the studio quality of what we pull off live,” Baldwin said. “It’s all original material.”

The band brought in Rene De la Muerte of The Brains to help produce the album, and Graves raves about the sound De la Muerte was able to capture by bringing out the best of the band.

“He’s a sound engineer by trade, so he knows the ins and outs,” Graves said.

For five days, the band worked to get their sound just right.

For Baldwin (whose stage name he received in the studio), the experience was less fun.

“I came down with shingles that week. It was six hours of drumming. It was not a fun time,” he chuckled.

The results are on the recording, but also on the stage.

“It changed the live show. It’s black and white. It has lots more energy and it is a lot more tight,” Baldwin said.

“We’re going in the right direction,” Graves said.

The band has ambitions to take the show on the road, perhaps touring Europe if time allows. They hope the show continues to grow.

“I don’t want to work forever,” Baldwin said. “I just want to bang on the drum all day.”

“Rock is a vacation from real life,” Graves said. “If we could tour a pyro-carnival freak show across Europe, that would be awesome.”

They also envision a Canadian tour, and have been in talks with various promotors.

“We’ll start a fire in Western Canada and see how far it spreads. There’s a lot of lumber out there,” Baldwin said.

With songs that riff on the undead, deals with the devil and all things supernatural, stage presence and make-up frequently plays into the show. At the release party, the band will also have burlesque dancers from Edmonton performing. It will be the band’s first show in Jasper in three months, and they also hope to do more shows in Calgary and Edmonton.

The CD release party will take place on July 17 at the Atha-B nightclub.
