Arts Jasper changes its tune Print

Arts Jasper may host fewer concerts next year in an effort to streamline operations and respond to community needs, according to outgoing Jasper Arts Council president Monika Schaefer.

Schaefer made the remarks as part of her outgoing presidents address where she noted the organization is changing.

“We specialize in classical music  and that makes us really unique ... but we needed  to evolve and reduce the number of events we do.”

While the concert series was well attended, Schaefer said the organization must continue to adjust. According to the auditor’s report, Arts Jasper is in a strong financial position, and several shows were well attended.

“It was an excellent season all around. Attendance was really high and we saw some new faces,” Schaefer said.

She pointed to the change in mandate from the Jasper heritage folk festival, which has scrapped its bi-annual festival in favour of monthly concerts. Schaefer said the two organizations now host very similar events, and Arts Jasper should concentrate on classical music to avoid cross-over.

“With the evolution of the folk and blues group, we must change with the times,” Schaefer said.

That means Arts Jasper will be less likely to bring in jazz shows such as the Mark Atkinson Trio, focusing on classical music instead.

Arts Jasper has already booked a ballet for next February, and is planning to host a variety show in the Fall.

“We have a loyal following, and that’s the way to go,” Schaefer said.

The organization has also decided to cut its patronage program, however they are still welcoming donations.

While Schaefer will stay on the executive as past president, Linda Szkarupa has taken the helm of the organization.

The arts council reported a successful and profitable year, as the majority of their concerts were well-attended.
