A Jasper resident was fined on Thurdsay for picking up road kill from the side of Highway 16 and putting it in his trunk.
Frederick G. Carter, 53, was fined $375 for on July 22 in Jasper Provincial Court for removing a white-tailed deer from the side of Highway 16 and placing it in his vehicle. The incident occurred near Jasper Lake on December 1, 2008.
His lawyer, Laurie Rodgers, said Carter was taking the white-tailed deer to his friend who would use the deer as bait and not for his own benefit.
“It had no value to him,” said Rodgers.
Carter was seen putting the animal into his truck and making a U-turn to head back east along Highway 16 by an off-duty Parks Canada Warden.
The warden used his emergency equipment to pull the 53-year-old over.
Rodgers said Carter only wanted to remove the animal and use the deer instead of leaving it at the side of the road.
According to Rodgers, Carter was “simply not thinking straight” when he put the animal in his car – an issue he attributed to a re-ocurring medical condition.
Despite this plea and a request for a lower fine due to Carter being an a disability pension, the Judge V. Myers fined the full amount.
“It’s the appropriate penalty for the crime,” he said when sentencing the man. |
