Jasper town councillors are remaining quiet about their intentions in the fall election. At a recent council meeting, the town set the wheels in motion for the election, as Beryl Cahill is once again set to return as the returning officer. This will be Cahill’s eighth election over the past 21 years.

Coun. Rico Damota was the only councillor to weigh in on the possibility of re-election.

“After the investment of the past three years, I’m strongly considering running again,” Coun. Damota said.

Coun. Damota said work and family commitments will also play a factor in his decision.

“It’s too early to say,” said Coun. Brenda Zinck, a thought echoed by Coun. Gloria Kongsrud.

Nominations will open on Sept. 20, 2010. Those interested in running are encouraged to contact The Fitzhugh, as the paper will profile each of the candidates, including the incumbents.

In other council news, Jasperites could be paying more for recycling in 2010. Council passed second reading of a bylaw that will see leaseholders pay $24 a year for recycling. The bill will be included as part of the solid waste account of the tax bill.

Council also decided to set up a Communities in Bloom Committee. The committee was missed during the 2010 council appointments.
