Campbell appointed caucus whip Print

West Yellowhead MLA Robin Campbell is the official whip for the Alberta government after being sworn into the caucus last week.

The role is a promotion for Campbell, who previously served as deputy-whip for two years, and said it means nothing but good things for his riding.

“For the riding it gives us a voice at the table, which I think is important,” he said.

According to Campbell, being the whip is akin to ‘the HR department of the party’ and means he has constant interaction with the 68 members, but this is what he particularly enjoys about the position.

“We have some pretty talented people... you learn a lot more and you pick up more ideas from the Province,” he said. “This position puts me in a perfect place to do that.”

A sounding board for ideas, Campbell said it was important he listened closely to ideas voiced throughout the party, while treating each individual “fairly and respectfully.”

“People have issues, and it’s important that they have some place that they can raise those issues, that they can feel confident that they can talk to you,” he said.

Though Campbell also noted that members might not always be happy with his decisions or answers he said it was important to keep a credible and accountable process.

“I think the key is how you say no,” he said. “I don’t think you can ever please everybody. Even though people might not get the answer they want... they need to respect you for the process... the way you handle yourself.”

Logistically, the position means Campbell will need to spend a little more time in Edmonton, where he will be involved in more meetings than ever.

“Time will be a little stretched,” he said, “ I’m just going to have to find more time to (speak with constituencies).”

Campbell said he was glad that Premier Ed Stelmach obviously had “faith” in his ability to do the job.
