The Jasper Sustainability Club for Youth (JSCY) in association with the Jasper Jr./Sr. High School and Jasper Elementary School parent councils, will host a public engagement session regarding the development of the new school.

The session, to be held on May 29 at 7 p.m. at the high school, welcomes all residents and the students are intending to focus the discussion on developing a collaborative community vision for the new high school. The location of the school will not be the focus of the session. 

The event will be facilitated by members of the JSCY and Ron Kato, an Vancouver architect that designed the first building to be awarded a LEED Platinum rating in Canada - the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve Operations Centre. The purpose of the evening will be to identify strategies that Jasper can take as a community to get a school that truly reflects the unique context of the community and recognizes the need for change in the traditional educational setting. 

The parent councils and JSCY say they are hoping for a crowd as diverse as possible, in order to ensure that some common ground is established before going forward in this fast-approaching process. The groups say they recognize the amazing potential that a new school represents for a community. 

This conversation will include representatives from Alberta Education and Alberta Infrastructure, Parks Canada, the Municipality of Jasper, Conseil Scolaire Centre-Nord, Grande Yellowhead Public School Board, local educators, local students, local businesses, local business organizations, local service providers and all other citizens interested in this collaborative process. 

Confirmed in attendance will also be Alberta Premier candidate, Doug Griffiths, the MLA from Battle River - Wainwright.
